Recommendations for use, maintenance, cleaning & sealing
Introduction
- At The Stone Carpet Company, we recognise that our responsibility to our customers goes beyond just supplying a new floor finish. You need to know how to maintain it, once it has been installed, in order to protect your investment.
- The correct cleaning and maintenance programme will ensure that your new floor retains its appearance and helps to extend its life.
- Our floors are resin based and suitable for hygienic clean room use and, as such, are easier to keep clean than almost any other floor surface.
A typical cleaning programme consists of four key elements:
- Curing Time: A period of seven days should normally be allowed after application of the finish, before any wet cleaning process is carried out. During this curing period, which will be dependent on ambient conditions and temperatures, floors should be suction cleaned or lightly swept with a soft broom.
- Initial clean: This should be carried out as soon as possible after the installation or, on new-build projects, as close as possible to the hand-over date. The initial clean prepares the surface for immediate use and ‘sets the standard’ for all future maintenance.
- Routine maintenance: The extent and frequency of all routine maintenance will depend on many factors – type and level of activity within the area; required level of hygiene or desired standard; the actual floor system to be cleaned, together with its overall size and texture; the type of soiling held on the surface.
- Periodic maintenance: This will be necessary, from time to time, in order to restore the surface of the floor to its original state or to its condition and appearance following the initial clean.
Each of these procedures is detailed separately.
Initial Clean - All Floors
- Remove all loose dust and debris using equipment appropriate for the area (e.g. brush, mop, sweeper or suction cleaner).
- Carefully remove any compacted dirt, grease, sticky substances, etc. Please take extreme care when using a scraper on any resin floor finish as the surface could become damaged.
- Using appropriate equipment , wet vacuum wash the floor following the manufacturers requirements for cleaning a textile carpet.
- Rinse the area thoroughly with fresh water and pick up the rinse water.
- Allow the whole floor to dry before putting the area into use.
Polished Concrete Only (Application of Protective Dressing)
On smooth floors where a gloss finish needs to be sustained, the initial clean described above will have prepared the floor for the application of a metallised emulsion polish.
Proceed as follows:
- Ensure that the floor is clean, dry and dust free.
- Pour a small amount of emulsion polish (as manufacturer recommendations) into a plastic bucket or applicator dish.
- Using a mop or polish applicator, apply a thin even coat to the floor, cutting-in carefully around the edges and into corners.
- Allow the polish to dry thoroughly, (30-40 minutes).
- Apply a second coat at right angles to the first, leaving a small gap (approx. 8-10cm) around the edges.
- Allow second coat to dry and apply further coat if desired (i.e. heavily trafficked areas).
- Allow the final coat to cure for 4 hours before area is put in to use.
Routine Maintenance (Daily/Weekly)
- Simply remove all debris and dust using equipment appropriate for the area (e.g. brush, mop, sweeper or suction cleaner).
- In the case of mud or heavy soiling, first allow this to dry, and remove with a brush. If necessary mop or wet vacuum the floor.
- In the case of liquid spills (juice, wine, etc), apply ample coverage of a neutral detergent, mop off, rinse or wet vacuum.
- Remove any scuff or rubber heel marks by hand. Take care not to abrade the sheen.
Periodic Maintenance (Monthly or as Required)
- Remove all loose debris and dust using equipment appropriate for the area (e.g. brush, mop, sweeper or suction cleaner).
- Carefully remove any compacted dirt, grease, sticky substances etc.
- Using appropriate equipment , wet vacuum wash the floor following the manufacturers requirements for cleaning a textile carpet.
- For the Polished Concrete, repeat the surface polish or wax treatment as recommended by the polish manufacturer.
Further Recommendations
Cleaners that contain bleach should not be used as these may dull the surface finish. Harsh abrasives and scourers should be avoided.
